In his 1993 study on The Politics of Language in Australia, Uldis Ozolins draws on an earlier report by Erwin Koch-Emmery on Italian immigrants in Canberra in 1953, that is, during the early part of the period of mass migration from Italy and other parts of Southern Europe into Australia which mainly covers the 1950s and 1960s. Koch-Emmery found himself drawn into the problems faced by the Italians through witnessing incidents such as the following, which took place in a canteen when Italian and Australian workers were queuing for lunch:
